Devin Haney can make it look easy against Kambosos, says analyst
Veteran boxing analyst Ed Tolentino believes that WBC world lightweight champion Devin Haney could make winning look easy against the unified world lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr.
Kambosos, who currently holds the WBA, WBO, and IBF world lightweight titles, is best known to Filipino fans for sparring with Manny Pacquiao in the past. He is scheduled to fight Haney for the undisputed championship this Sunday, June 5 at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
"If you prefer a boxer, you go with Haney. We saw how good he picks his shots, he has very good spacing and defense too. If you want action, someone who goes in and is aggressive, you go for Kambosos. His tenacity is something else," said Tolentino.
"In my opinion, the boxer is the favorite and that is Haney. He can make this an easy fight but they have underestimated Kambosos before. Up to now he is still not getting the credit he should be receiving for that victory over Teofimo Lopez."
Haney, 23, currently holds a perfect record of 27-0 with 15 knockouts. Kambosos (20-0, 10KOs), meanwhile, is coming off his biggest win to date against Lopez in November which was touted by scribes as the 2021 upset of the year.
Tolentino says he sees flashes of a young Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Haney but admits that the young American is yet to be taken to deep waters in his career.
"Haney has the touches of a Floyd Mayweather. Some view him as a boxing fighter, but I do not think he is yet to fight someone who would bring out the best in him. Hopefully, that would be Kambosos," Tolentino said.
