Rey Vargas says he is better than Magsayo ahead of title fight
Former WBC world super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas said that he is a better fighter than WBC world featherweight champion Mark Magsayo ahead of their showdown on Sunday, July 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
"We're both level fighters, we're both at the top, but I still feel like a world champion," Vargas told DAZN.
"I know what it means to be there, the honey, what it means to be there, but that doesn't intimidate me what Magsayo says or does, because I know what it's like to be there and again I want to be there. Even if Magsayo is there and he's good and undefeated, if he's good I'm better."
Vargas, who holds a perfect record of 35-0 with 22 knockouts, trains under the watchful eye of Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain. He is, however, unbothered by the fact that Magsayo is also trained by an equally capable Freddie Roach, and said that he already has the trainer's number.
"The truth is that I'm not too worried about Freddie, I've already won when I've faced one of his fighters. At the end of the day, it will just be me and Magsayo in the ring and I'll prove that if he's good I'm great. It's going to be a very interesting fight," Vargas said.
"The styles lend themselves, the fighters are tough. You know my drive, my grit, and bravery. I get knocked down, I get up, I get bloody and I keep fighting, I don't crack, I don't swim, that's what people like and that extra is in it for the fight."
