Danny Garcia wins 154 debut with majority decision over Benavidez
Former two-division champion Danny Garcia emerged victorious in his junior middleweight debut following a majority decision win over Jose Benavidez Jr. this Sunday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Both fighters needed little time to warm up and throw big punches in the early going. Garcia looked sharp with his counterpunches, right hand and even made his opponent miss. Benavidez, on the other hand, was mostly on the attack seemingly unbothered by Garcia's power.
Come the middle rounds, Garcia seemed to have figured out everything that Benavidez has to offer. They fought in the center of the ring but it was Garcia who got the better of the exchanges by going to the head and body while effectively avoiding Benavidez's shots.
Benavidez managed to sneak clean shots to the head and body in round 9 but Garcia ate his shots without a problem. Garcia stuck to his game plan in the championship rounds, allowing him to cruise to the final bell and win the fight on points.
Garcia, who was off the ring for a couple of years, improved his record to 37-3 with 21 knockouts while Benavidez Jr. dropped to 27-2-1 with 18 knockouts.
