No more super fights on the horizon for GGG after losing to Canelo – analyst
Veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino does not see any more super fights coming Gennady Golovkin’s way following his defeat against the undisputed super middleweight king Saul “Canelo” Alvarez this past weekend in Las Vegas.
The 40-year-old unified middleweight champion from Kazakhstan was passive and got dominated by the Mexican pound-for-pound superstar en route to losing via unanimous decision in his last outing. According to Tolentino, Golovkin merely fought to survive against Alvarez.
“Even before the fight we saw his slide, he is on his way down. We thought he would be motivated. We thought that his passion to avenge his only loss would show up, but no, he went for the safer side. He refused to go out of his shell,” Tolentino told Sparring Sessions LIVE.
Golovkin, who still holds the WBA and IBF world titles at 160 pounds, may go after the other champions in his division according to Tolentino. Be that as it may, the respected Filipino analyst believes that there are no more big money fights lined up for Golovkin moving forward.
“Other than Jermall Charlo, I do not see any super fight on the horizon for Golovkin. He would go back to his regular programming,” Tolentino said.
“The super fights are done especially after what he has shown against Alvarez because promoters may have second thoughts. The super fight era is over for Golovkin. The glory days and big paydays are over.”
