Jerwin Ancajas at Zuffa Boxing 08

Former world champion Jerwin Ancajas came up short in his featherweight debut, dropping a unanimous decision to unbeaten Omar Trinidad in the co-main event of Zuffa Boxing 08 on Monday morning (Philippine time) at The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

All three of the judges’ scorecards read 97-93 in favor of the American, who kept his unblemished record intact at 21-0-2.

The early rounds were closely contested, but Trinidad gradually took control beginning in the sixth. The former WBC Continental featherweight champion found his rhythm and steadily increased his offensive output, keeping Ancajas on the defensive.

Realizing he was falling dangerously behind on the scorecards, Ancajas abandoned his cautious approach, matching Trinidad's aggression in the 10th and final round. The gamble backfired, however, as the Californian wobbled the former IBF super flyweight champion with a massive right hand.

For a moment, it appeared referee Tony Weeks was on the verge of stepping in, but the Filipino veteran weathered the storm and survived until the final bell.

By the end of the fight, Trinidad had outlanded Ancajas 172-113 overall, including a commanding 118-62 edge in power punches.

The defeat snapped Ancajas' four-fight winning streak as the Davao del Norte native fell to 38-5-2.
