5 JMC players in Mati Open chess


DAVAO CITY, Philippines - Five University of Mindanao (UM) and three Jose Maria College (JMC) players will see action in the 2008 Ist Mati Open Chess Tournament at the Emmanuel Pelaez Gym, City of Mati, Davao Oriental on Friday to Sunday. Tournament director Alex Singco bared this to Sun.Star Davao in an e-mail Monday. The UM team is composed of brothers Chito Dimakiling II and Adrian Dimakiling, Brene Parreño, May Micayabas and Cerlin Anabieza while JMC will rely on the services of Jester Andoy, Joe Art Capatan, and Jay Bulicatin. National Master Retanal of the Malita Chess Association also signed up for the P42,250 tournament along with townmate Cy Balbanera, Elias Banguiran of General Santos, Panabo City's Rodel Alsado and his brother Ronnel, and Island Garden City of Samal's Alex Cavite and Oberio Aglipay. Angsingco said registration is still going on in the seven-round Swiss System format tournament that offers P10,000 cash prize for the champion while the runner-up will pocket P7,500 and the third-placer will receive P5,000. They will also receive trophies. Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat is supporting the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned meet. - Sun.Star Davao
