Banal foe ‘el Torito’ tips scales twice to make weight limit
MANILA, Philippines â Rafael âEl Torito" Concepción had to tip the scales twice Friday in order to meet the required weight limit for his super-flyweight world-title fight against AJ Banal, Philboxing.com reported. The Panamanian fighter, who will face hometown hero Banal on Saturday for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) belt, weighed in at 116lbs in his first try and needed an additional two-hour workout to reach the mandatory 115lbs in the weigh-in held at SM City Cebu. Banal, who is hoping to win the title in front of boxing-crazy Cebuano fans, tipped the scales at 115lbs in his first try. Banal and Concepcion will face off in the main event at the Cebu City Coliseum, the fourth world-title fight featuring a Filipino boxer in the last six weeks. Milan Melindo, another Filipino title hopeful, weighed in at 108lbs in his first try, but Panamanian opponent Carlos Melo needed to step on the scales three times before reaching the desired weight. Melo was overweight by three-fourth lb in his first try, one-fourth lb in the next before he got the 108lb requirement in his third try after an hour of additional workout. Melindo and Melo will clash for the WBA Intercontinental light-flyweight title. Michael Domingo and opponent Rivo Rengkung of Indonesia got the weight requirement in their first try. Domingo weighed in at 117 and one-half lbs, while Rengkung tipped the scales at 116 and one-four lbs. They will vie for the World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight title, made weight on the first try. The undercard matches consist of James Bacon against Skak Max, Jun Intor vs.Roldan Malinao, Robert Allanic vs. Leonardo Doronio, and Hilario Canillas vs. Ramil Cabalan. â GMANews.TV
