Antonio wins game 5 vs Torre at QC chess road show

MANILA, Philippines – Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio Jr. scored a smashing victory against GM Eugene Torre in the fifth and penultimate game of the Quezon City Chess Road Show: The Rematch, which was held at the Shrine of Pugad Lawin in Barangay Bahay Toro, Quezon City. Antonio used a risky strategy to put himself in a strong positional advantage enroute to a victory in a Scotch Game that ended in 47 moves, organizers said on Thursday. Because of Antonio's game plan, Torre was forced to play against time and use risky moves, forcing him to resign after four hours of play. "I'm happy to win again (after losing Game 4)," Antonio said. "I really pushed myself to win, especially because I was playing white. I had an advantage in position and he got into time trouble." Antonio also won Game 2 of the six-game duel held at the Alfredo's Restaurant along Tomas Morato Avenue last July 23. With the victory, Antonio is now leading at 3-2. But Torre can still force a seventh game if he wins the sixth game scheduled at the Gateway Mall of the Araneta Center in Cubao on Friday. "I have to be extra careful," Antonio said. "A draw is enough to wrap up the series. But knowing Eugene, I'm sure he will go all-out to equalize." Antonio also defeated Torre, 6.5-5.5, in their 12-game Centennial Chess Duel, which was staged by Land Bank in Makati in 1998. But Torre is not about to give up the fight. "It's not yet over," Torre said. "I'll try to equalize again in the next game. As of this posting, the 56-year-old Torre holds the opening initiative with the white pieces in the sixth game at the Gateway Mall. - GMANews.TV
