Germany defeats Spain for field hockey gold

BEIJING – Germany has defeated Spain 1-0 in the men's field hockey gold-medal match. Germany's Christopher Zeller scored the only goal in the 19th minute of Saturday's final. The Germans had last won gold in 1992. Spain added to the silver medals it won in 1980 and 1996. Germany, the reigning world champion, nearly increased its lead midway through the second half. Spanish goalkeeper Francisco Cortes denied Matthias Witthaus, and another German shot hit the left goalpost. A penalty corner by Santiago Freixa of Spain with about 10 minutes to play sailed wide left of the German goal. – AP
