Tierro, Davis Cup coach clash in PCA Open tennis Rd 3
MANILA, Philippines - Patrick John Tierro cruised against an unknown opponent on Monday and set up a match against a familiar foe in the next round of the Philippine Columbian Association Open tennis tournament. Tierro dusted off Terrence Estrope 6-0, 6-2 in the second round at the PCA courts in Paco district. The RP Davis Cup veteran is scheduled to play Cris Cuatro, Tierro's coach on the national team. "It is a good thing to play your coach," said Tierro, who, according to him lost to Cuarto in their only encounter a few years. "He is a veteran already but I think I have an advantage in terms of stamina." Cuatro also breezed past through the next round, downing wild-card Kyle Cordero 6-2, 6-3. "I've been in shape for a month so I believe I'm in form for this competition," said Tierro, who aims for his first singles title in the tournament. Against Estrope, Tierro won the first 10 games before Estrope stopped the bleeding, made it 4-1 and broke Tierro to come within 4-2. Tierro snuffed Estrope's hopes two games later with an ace on matchpoint. Johnny Arcilla, the defending champion, also advanced after winning over Von Ruelan 6-2, 6-2. Rolando Ruel, the no.3 seed, got by Ronald Dazo 6-4, 6-1. - GMANews.TV
