UAAP volleyball: Reigning men's champ UST wins 10th straight


MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas only needed three sets to dispatch University of the Philippines, 25-16, 26-24, 25-11, Wednesday to earn its 10th consecutive win in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. The defending champion Tigers relied on Jayson Ramos, John Paul Torres and Henry James Pecana to remain unbeaten and move four wins away of sweeping the tournament and earn an outright finals spot. Ramos, Torres and Pecana combined for 38 points as the Tigers handed the Fighting Maroons their fourth loss in 10 games. UP, nevertheless, tied Ateneo at third place. Jan Paolo Martinez contributed 13 markers, the lone double figure scorer for the Fighting Maroons. In the first game, Adamson fend off a pesky National University squad, 25-14, 22-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-13. Froilan Pantone had 16 points while Carl Vitug added 13 markers as the Falcons improved to 5-5, good for fifth position. Diober Reyes, Nino Jeruz and Arvien Antiquera also chipped in 12 points each for Adamson to escape with a hard-fought win. Jan Jasper Adorador fired a game-high 19 points but the Bulldogs could not find the finishing kick as they remained winless in 10 tries. Games resume on Saturday at the Far Eastern University gym with UP facing Adamson at 9:00 a.m. and UST taking on its last season's opponent in the finals FEU at 11:00 a.m. Team standings: UST 10-0; DLSU 7-3; UP 6-4; Ateneo 6-4; Adamson 5-5; FEU 5-5; UE 1-9; NU 0-10. - GMANews.TV
