PBL: Romero changes Harbour name to R2 Builders

MANILA, Philippines – Harbour Centre fans will no longer see the storied ballclub in the next Philippine Basketball League (PBL) season after owner Mikee Romero decided to retire the Batang Pier jersey. “This is the last championship for Harbour, good thing we leave on a winning note," said Romero after the Batang Pier won a record sixth straight title beating Magnolia Purewater in their best-of-five title showdown for the PG Flex Linoleum Cup title. Harbour’s feat established them as the greatest amateur team this era next to the fabled Crispa Redmanizers of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Romero said Harbour’s jersey and banner will be retired and the team would come back as R2 Builders next conference. “This would be the last time the Harbour Centre jersey will be worn, in any basketball leagues, whether in the PBL or the PBA." Even Harbour Centre rookie guard Andy Barroca was sad when Romero announced his decision to retire the team’s colors after winning their sixth straight title. “Nakapang hinayang naman kasi dahil halos lahat ng mga college players ay gustong maglaro sa Harbour Centre sa PBL. Iba ang dating kapag nakasuot ka ng Harbour Centre uniform, proud na proud ka," said Barroca, who was named the Finals most valuable player. Some of the players that donned the Harbour jersey are Mark Cardona, Jason Castro, LA Tenorio, Larry Fonacier, Joseph Yeo, Gabby Espinas, Ronjay Buenafe, Chico Lanete, TY Tang, Solomon Mercado, Jeff Chan, Beau Belga and Chad Alonzo, who are now playing in different PBA ballclubs. The Batang Pier’s success launched Jorge Gallent’s coaching career and gave Eric Arejola the break he needed to become one of the most respected PBL team managers. – GMANews.TV
