UAAP baseball: Adamson wins crown via shutout

MANILA, Philippines – Adamson completed a 10-game sweep of its regular season games in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) baseball tournament to win the title outright. The Falcons’ 10th win came at the expense of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, a 10-0 triumph on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Field to successfully defend the crown. Pitcher Romeo Jasmin limited Ateneo to just five hits while Marvin Malig blasted a two-run double to spark Adamson’s fourth-run explosion. Paolo Castillo, Kirk Long and Carlo Olivarez were the only Ateneo batters that managed to connect against variety of pitches thrown by Jasmin, who also had five strikeouts in the game. The Falcons’ bats were in full swing tagging the Eagles’ pitching duo of Alex Tolome and Luke Bernardo with 11 hits. Adamson’s batters actually needed two innings to get into their groove with Malig highlighting the hit parade with a long hit to center as the Falcons opened up with a 4-0 lead. "Our hard work paid off. Our players gave their best but my hats off to Jasmin and Malig who really led this team this year," said Adamson coach Orlando Binarao. The title was Adamson’s 10th overall since winning its first crown in 1986. This also marks the third time that Adamson won the baseball and softball titles in one season having done the trick in 1997 and 1998. Binarao believes they can win a grandslam next season since Jasmin and Malig will be returning to play their last year. "Adamson is the last team to win three straight baseball titles and I believe we're capable of duplicating the feat since we're parading an intact line-up next season." UST took second place with an 11-9 win over NU while Ateneo finished third. UP placed fourth with a 15-2 victory over La Salle. – GMANews.TV
