UAAP tennis: La Salle moves closer of winning men’s crown

MANILA, Philippines – La Salle moved closer of derailing defending University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s tennis champion University of Santo Tomas’ title retention bid after a 3-0 shutout win in Game One Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. Veteran RP netter PJ Tierro and Jandrick De Castro won over Wilbur Orillano and Jandrick De Castro, 7-5, 4-6, 6-6 (1-1) after Orillano retired due to cramps. John Will Baldonado beat Miguel Narvaez, 6-2, 6-3, as Michael Basco defeated Raymond Villarete, 6-1, 7-6 (5), to complete the sweep. “PJ gives us a solid player in doubles plus the singles players really prepared themselves for their UST opponents," said La Salle coach Roland Kraut. The Green Archers aim for their first title since 2006 in Friday’s Game Two at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. Game Three, if necessary, is on Saturday. The Tigers are seeking their third straight title this season. The UST netters could have won the title outright but lost to La Salle in the final day of the elimination round. – GMANews.TV
