San Beda booters cop 8th straight NCAA crown
MANILA, Philippines - San Beda College extended its reign in the National Collegiate Athletic Association football wars after claiming its eighth consecutive seniors crown in the NCAA Season 84 football tournament at the Philsports Complex track and football field. The Red Lions of former national coach Aris Caslib trounced Philippine Christian University, 5-0, to clinch the title and maintain their league domination. Jerome Orcullo started the scoring parade for the Red Lions as he scored the first and second goals in the 19th and 22nd minute of the first half. Joseph Jino Villarino followed it up with a header in the 59th minute in front of two more goals by Paul Adrian Concepcion and David Franz Fornea in the 79th and 87th minute. "We may have swept all our games but it's really hard for us since we have 20 players that must have their own share of playing time every game," said Caslib, who also won Coach of the Year honors for the eighth straight time. June Antonio Abiera of San Beda was adjudged seniors division Most Valuable Player while teammates Jemson Ayuban and Miguel Fabroada won the Best Goalkeeper and Best Defender awards, respectively. Sharing the limelight were Ryan Enrique Hermida of PCU, who won the Best Striker and Best Scorer trophies and College of St. Benilde team, which was conferred with the FIFA Fair Play award. In the juniors division, De La Salle Greenhills-College of St. Benilde claimed its fifth straight crown after beating University of Perpetual Help, 10-2. Back-to-back MVP Gerardo Valmayor and teammate Ian Miguel Garcia knocked in three goals apiece for the Junior Blazers with Valmayor scoring in the 3rd, 23rd and 61st minutes and Miguel on the 11th, 14th and 75th minutes. Valmayor, who made a total of 21 goals in the whole season, was also awarded the Best Striker and Best Scorer trophies while teammate Miguel Monfort copped the Best midfielder award and mentor Freddie Estacion took Coach of the Year honors. Other individual awardees in the high school level were Jeffrey Cuaycong of San Beda as Best Defender and Mario Lester Corpuz of PCU as Best Goalkeeper.
