Mindanao leg: 6 teams earn Nestea beach volley finals spots


MANILA, Philippines – Mindanao State University-Tawi Tawi and University of Mindanao-Davao ruled the men’s and women’s division of the 13th Nestea Fit Beach Volley Mindanao leg Saturday at the Tagum Beach Volley drome at Rotary Park in Tagum City, Davao Del Norte. The MSU-Tawi Tawi pair of Mohammad Reza Asakil and Halim Khan beat the UM-Davao partnership of Paul John Saraga and Galileo Mascardo, 21-8, 21-17, in the men’s final. Janice Arnaiz and Jennifer Conde of UM-Davao downed Lourdilyn Catubag and Jestine Carla Gonzales of University of Mindanao-Tagum, 21-16, 21-11, in the women’s final. Mahardika Institute of Technology and Holy Cross of Davao College secured berths to the national finals after taking third place in the men’s and women’s division respectively. Mahardika went through the wringer before beating the Holy Cross of Davao College men’s team, 27-25, 20-22, 22-20 to take the men’s third place. The Holy Cross of Davao College women’s team, nevertheless, took the third place in the women’s division after beating MSU-Tawi Tawi, 21-14, 19-21, 15-10. In the men’s semifinals, MSU-Tawi Tawi beat Holy Cross of Davao College, 18-21, 21-18, 16-14, while UM-Davao beat Mahardika, 18-21, 21-18, 16-14, to clinch berths in the national finals. UM-Davao beat Holy Cross of Davao College, 21-17, 21-16, and UM-Tagum won over MSU-Tawi Tawi, 17-21, 21-17, 15-12, in the women’s semifinals to also grab the spots in Boracay. The Mindanao representatives joined the Luzon men’s teams of Far Eastern University, Letran and San Beda as well as the Luzon women’s teams of Adamson, FEU and University of the Cordilleras in the national finals set May 6 to 9. Three more teams in the men’s and women’s division will join them during the Visayas leg slated April 16 to 18 in Mandaue City. – GMANews.TV
