Harlem Globetrotters return to Manila
MANILA, Philippines â The Harlem Globetrotters, who visited the country for the first time in 1952, brings their act back at the Araneta Coliseum on May 24 and 25. The Globetrotters' will have two shows on Sunday (May 24) at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and at 7:00 p.m. the following day. Manila will be the third country the Globetrotters will visit in Southeast Asia this year following similar stops in Malaysia and Singapore. From the Philippines, they will bring their act to Hong Kong. The Globetrotters will be playing against American exhibition team Washington Generals in a staged game. Founded by Abe Seperstein in 1926 in Chicago, the Globetrotters actually started as a competitive team and will only bring out their mischievous acts inside the court after posting a huge advantage in the game. Gradually, however, the fans sought the Globetrotters not for their basketball skills but for their antics inside the court. Some of the NBA stars who were once part of the Globetrotters are Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Connie Hawkins, Nat Clifton, Davey Neidig, George Lemon, Jerome James, John Chaney, Reece âGoose" Tatum and Hubert Ausbie. PBA reinforcements that also played in the team are Scooter McFadgon, Gee Gervin, Anthony Miller, Chris Morris, Tremaine Fowlkes, Donald Williams, Derrick Canada, Cedric Ceballos, Ben Davis, Brandon Dean, Ronnie Fields, Kevin Holland, Kenny Battle, Brandon Williams, Monty Buckley and Jeff Varem. Currently, the team is composed of Skyscraper Alleyne (7-3), Keiron âSweet Pea" Shine (5-10), Kris âHi-Lite" Bruton (6-7), Wun âThe Shot" Versher (6-4), "El Gato" Melendez (6-8), Apollo Fraser (6-9), "Slick" Willie Shaw (6-6), Bull Bullard (6-4) and Aundre âHot Shot" Branch (6-4). â GMANews.TV
