Yao Ming scored a season-high 38 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots, which is considered perhaps his best game of the season Wednesday night, carrying the Rockets past the Indiana Pacers 103-99. Last month, Yao was the runner-up as the NBA's most overrated player in a survey of players done by Sports Illustrated. But now that he is fully recovered from the toe injury that cost him 21 games, it's hard to say anything bad about him. "Since he's come back, he's been an unbelievable player," Indiana's Peja Stojakovic said. "He's so much better this year. He's unstoppable right now. He reminds me of when Shaquille (O'Neal) was winning championships in Los Angeles." Yao topped 30 points for the third straight game and went 10-for-10 from the free throw line. He's gone over 20 points in nine straight games and reached double digits in rebounds in eight of them. "I know my job," Yao said. "I know what the team needs me to do. I need to score, rebound, guard people. I know who I am and I know what I need to do." In other games, it was: Cleveland 98, Toronto 97; Detroit 106, Chicago 101; Miami 118, Washington 112; Boston 104, Philadelphia 101; Charlotte 104, Golden State 101; Sacramento 123, Milwaukee 116; the Los Angeles Lakers 113, New Orleans 107; Utah 96, Minnesota 93; and Memphis 99, Seattle 74. The 7-foot-6 Yao has taken on an even more important role with leading scorer Tracy McGrady's back problems flaring up again. McGrady missed Tuesday's victory over Minnesota, then left during the third quarter of Wednesday's victory. Yao then took over, helping Houston overcome a 17-point deficit to win for the seventh time in nine games. "The big fella, he's really putting us on his back," said point guard Rafer Alston, who had a season-high 14 assists. McGrady didn't sound confident he could get back quickly, so the Rockets will need Yao to continue his impressive stretch. They play San Antonio twice and Dallas once in their next four games, and need to keep winning if they want to reach the playoffs after their horrendous start. "We know that our backs are against the wall," guard David Wesley said. "We know that we don't have time to be losing games. We have a tough schedule coming up, and it's still a long way to go, but we've just got to find the way." Lakers 113, Hornets 107 Kobe Bryant scored 18 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter as Los Angeles disappointed the standing room crowd that put aside its Hurricane Katrina problems for a night of cheering on its team. It was the first professional sporting event in New Orleans since the Aug. 29 storm destroyed much of the city, scattered residents across the United States and sent the Hornets to Oklahoma City for the season. Heat 118, Wizards 112 At Miami, Dwyane Wade returned after missing two games with a sprained right wrist to score 40 points and lead the Heat to their 10th straight win. Gilbert Arenas scored 28 points for the Wizards, who lost for the fifth time in six games. Pistons 106, Bulls 101 At Auburn Hills, Mich., Richard Hamilton scored 14 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to help Detroit improve to 27-2 at home. Chauncey Billups led the Pistons with 27 points, while Ben Gordon had 28 for Chicago and Andres Nocioni finished with 23. Cavaliers 98, Raptors 97 At Toronto, Damon Jones made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Cleveland to its fourth straight victory. LeBron James had 35 points for the Cavaliers, who also beat Toronto on Tuesday night. Celtics 104, 76ers 101 At Boston, Paul Pierce had his first triple-double of the season with 31 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. He has at least 30 points in seven straight games. Allen Iverson scored 32 points, but finished 10-for-31 for Philadelphia. Grizzlies 99, SuperSonics 74 At Seattle, Pau Gasol had the first triple-double of his career with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. and Memphis routed Seattle. Jake Tsakalidis had a season-high 17 points and 15 rebounds, shooting 7-of-10, as Memphis outrebounded Seattle 51-35. Jazz 96, Timberwolves 93 At Salt Lake City, Andrei Kirilenko had eight blocks and eight assists to go with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Utah won consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month. Kings 123, Bucks 116 At Milwaukee, Mike Bibby scored 36 points, and Sacramento tied its season high for points en route to its fifth win in six games. Michael Redd scored 32 points and T.J. Ford tied a career high with 24 for Milwaukee, which has lost three consecutive games. Bobcats 104, Warriors 101 At Charlotte, N.C., Jumaine Jones scored 29 points, including a pair of free throws with 1.4 seconds to play, and the Bobcats battled back in the fourth quarter. -AP
