UST grounds Ateneo in UAAP jrs caging


The Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs succeeded where their seniors’ counterparts failed on Sunday, beating defending champion Ateneo, 75-72, in the UAAP Season 72 juniors’ basketball competitions at The Arena in San Juan. Kevin Ferrer and Kyle Neypes combined for 29 points for the Tiger Cubs, who not only avenged the Tigers’ 70-80 loss to the Eagles over at the seniors division but also boosted their own campaign in juniors play. Improving to a 7-3 win-loss slate, the Tiger Cubs now shared second place with the Eaglets, two games behind league-leading La Salle-Zobel (9-1). The Eaglets were led by Kiefer Ravena with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Raphael Banal’s 22 markers. The Junior Archers maintained their top standing after turning back Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Educational Foundation (FEU-FERN), 77-74.

Gwyne Capacio churned in 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals while Nico Elorde added 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists as the Junior Archers chalked up their ninth win. Terrence Romeo, who scored a league-high 83 points against University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) last Tuesday, was limited to a “meager" 27 points as the Baby Tamaraws dropped to 6-4, good for fourth. Other juniors’ games saw University of the East routing National University, 82-57, and Adamson prevailing over UPIS, 76-59. The Junior Warriors and the Baby Falcons evened their respective slates to 5-5. Leading the attack for the Junior Warriors was Isiah Banawa, who had 18 points, eight rebounds, and three steals against the Junior Maroons, who got a whopping 31-point, 20-rebound performance from Kevin Villanueva. - GMANews.TV
