Unhappy Capacio slams officiating in FEU’s win over Adamson

Far Eastern University coach Glenn Capacio slammed the officiating during their 72nd UAAP men’s basketball game against Adamson on Thursday saying that the referees are controlling the match. “I'm not happy with the officiating. Kapag nakakalayo kami kinokontrol nila ang game (The referees are controlling the match every time we pull away)," said Capacio minutes after the Tamaraws’ 84-75 win over the Adamson Falcons. “Feeling ko di na kami marunong dumepensa. Player din ako, kapag may manipis na tawag mag-iisip ka na. Hindi mo na alam ang gagawain mo at di sa malamang di ka na dedepensa sa susunod (As if we don’t know how to defend. I’m also a player, if there are soft calls you might have second thoughts. You won’t know what to do and would probably not defend)," added Capacio, whose team posted a more convincing victory compared to their 63-60 first round triumph over the Falcons.

“Nababahala ako sa inilalaro namin, lalo na sa huling dalawang games ng team (“I’m bothered on how we are playing right now, especially in our last two games)," said Capacio, whose much taller squad were beaten off the boards by the Falcons, 48-39. “Pero at least nanalo kami kahit talo kami sa rebounds at marami kaming turnovers (Still we managed to win despite we were beaten in rebounds and we have a lot of turnovers)," added Capacio. “Dapat din namin ayusin ang rebounding namin. Pero kahit paano, tumaas ang assists namin, (We should also improve on our rebounding. But we have more assists)."

Capacio said he’s not satisfied with the Tams securing a Final Four berth. “Ang target talaga namin ay makapasok sa top two. Ayaw naming maging pangatlo (We’re targeting of making it into the top two. We don’t want to finish third)." The top two teams enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinal phase of the tournament. The Final Four format will have the top seeded team facing the fourth ranked squad while No. 2 takes on No. 3. Tams rookie Ryan Garcia, who scored a career high 25 points, completed a four-point play in the final four minutes of the fourth period to douse the Falcons’ rally and securing FEU’s ninth win in 11 games to assure them of a semis spot. That four-point play ignited an 11-1 FEU wind-up that took the fight out of Adamson, which suffered its seventh loss that eliminated them from the semifinal race.

Adamson even posted a 33-24 lead in the second quarter but failed to find an answer a strong FEU finish. FEU playmaker Andy Barroca accounted for five of the Tamaraws’ 17 assists. FEU needs to win at least two of their three remaining matches to ensure itself of earning the coveted twice-to-beat edge. They will face the same UP team that became the only squad to defeat both Ateneo and La Salle this season. After UP, the Tams will face La Salle on September 5 and defending champion Ateneo the following day. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV
