Filipino boxer Donaire loses to flyweight champ


US-based Filipino boxer Glenn Donaire lost his chance to become a world flyweight champion after losing to Australia-based Armenian Vic Darchinyan via a technical decision in their International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title fight in Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Saturday (Sunday in Manila). According to a report in www.doghouseboxing.com,Vic Darchinyan speaks; "I Broke His Jaw", referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight at 1:27 of the sixth round, by which time Donaire felt the effects of a jaw injury from an accidental head butt. Weeks call on the ringside doctor to check the injury and recommended the bout be stopped. That prompted Weeks to go on the scorecards. All three judges scored it 60-53 for Darchinyan. Darchinyan controlled the tempo of the fight, and in the fourth round sent Donaire down to the canvass. The Darchinyan-Donaire fight served as undercard fight in the Diego Corrales-Joel Casamayor bout for the WBC lightweight title. Donaire's younger brother, Nonito Donaire, has successfully defended his NABF Super Flyweight title over Mexican Oscar Andrade via unanimous decision. The 26-year-old Glenn Donaire was born in General Santos City, but is now based in San Leandro, California. Meanwhile, superflyweight Diosdado "Prince" Gabi boosted his chance for another crack for a title shot after demolishing Mexican Felipe Rivas in the first round of their nontitle fight in the US Friday (Saturday in Manila). - GMANews.TV
