Win some, lose some for UST jins
University of Sto. Tomas retained the menâs crown and reclaimed the juniors title but had to relinquish its long-held throne in the womenâs competitions over the weekend in the 72nd UAAP taekwondo tournament at the UST gym. The menâs team erased a 0-3 deficit in disposing of Ateneo in the finals, 4-3, behind the exploits of featherweight Dane Pio de Roda, lightweight Ernest John Mendoza, welterweight Samuel Thomas Morisson and middleweight Jose Anthony Soriano.

The Dindo Simpao-mentored UST also reigned supreme in juniorsâ play, sweeping all its matches to bring back the plum to the España campus. Highlight of this conquest was a vengeful 3-2 triumph over UE, the squad responsible for breaking the Cubs' six-year dynasty in 2008. Gerry del Rosario and Clint Ferrer starred for the Tiger Cubs and were rewarded with the MVP and Rookie of the Year honors, respectively. But it was not all happy endings for the Santo Tomas contingent as the lady jins fell short in their quest for an unprecedented seven-peat. The Tigresses suffered a 3-4 setback to the FEU Lady Tams, who won their first womenâs title in the taekwondo competitions. In that final match up, UST actually went up, 2-0, before bantamweight Karla Alava kept FEUâs title hopes alive with a crucial win over Aphrodite Brillantes. Featherweight Kricia Jereza gave UST another win at the expense of Ashiel Vedana but the Lady Tamaraws swept all their remaining matches to snatch the tiara from the Tigresses. Richelle Dinolan and Winlove de la Cerna were named MVP and Rookie of the Year, respectively, after leading the Lady Tamaraws to the championship. UST failed in its bid to complete a sweep of the menâs, womenâs and juniors divisions (a feat it achieved from 2003-2006) but coach Simpao said they would gladly accept the 2009 results. âWe feel blessed and grateful for these triumphs (menâs and juniors) and the defeat of the womenâs team as well," said the former medalist in international competitions, who vowed to bring back the womenâs crown to UST next year. âLooking forward to reclaiming it next season and begin another winning run." - GMANews.TV More Videos
