Lady Archers hit bull's eye in UAAP badminton

De La Salle U ended a four-year title drought in the UAAP women’s badminton tournament as the Lady Archers outclassed University of the East, 3-1, over the weekend in the Season 72 finals at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall. The Lady Archers turned to the splendid plays of MVP Rachel Guerrero and Desca Calimlim to parry the challenge of the Lady Warriors and win their first championship since 2005 and fourth overall.

The two squads fought to a 1-1 standoff early on after Calimlim clubbed UE’s Jesa Sampurna, 21-10, 21-10, and UE’s former MVP Racquel Guerrero defeated DLSU’s Geli Ramos, 21-13, 21-15. Calimlim then rose to the occasion, teaming up with Danica Bolos to beat the UE pairing of Racquel Guerrero and Fatima Cruz, 21-18, 14-21, 21-15, and put La Salle to the threshold of victory. Rachel Guerrero wasted no time in seizing this opportunity as she and partner Bernice Arsenio took the title-clincher via a 21-17, 21-15 dismantling of Sampurna and May Pamorada in the second doubles match. The Lady Archers’ male counterparts, however, could not make it a double-celebration as the Green Archers bowed to the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, 2-3, in their own titular showdown. It was the first men's crown for the Tigers since their back-to-back romp in 2004 and 2005. - GMANews.TV
