Local basketball stars clash in game for a cause

It’s a basketball game for a cause that promises to be very, very competitive. A doubleheader featuring the best and brightest stars of both the amateur and pro hoops will be played Monday at the Araneta Coliseum intended to raise funds for victims of typhoon Ondoy. Powerade-Team Pilipinas and coach Yeng Guiao takes on the RP-Smart Gilas team of Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman in the 7 p.m. main game of the cagefest dubbed `Pinoy Basketball’ Kakampi Nyo.’

Key officials involved in the project serving as joint venture between the PBA, Samahang Basketbol ng Plipinas (SBP), UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and Liga Pilipinas were present during the simple launching of the one-day meet held at the PBA office in Libis Wednesday. And judging from the way they talked about the coming event, it appears there’s more than meets the eye than just a charity game on hand. “Yes, it’s an exhibition game, but a game everybody wants to win in the end," said Toroman. “We’ll try to do our best to be competitive with Powerade-Team Pilipinas." Guiao, also the vice-governor of Pampanga, failed to show up during the early morning presscon. To start the ball rolling, Harbour Centre owner and outgoing PBL chairman Mikee Romero pledged P500,000 for the meet, while Smart Sports head Patrick Gregorio pitched in P300,000.
Aguilar left to choose where to play in charity game Powerade-Team Pilipinas won’t get in the way if ever controversial rookie Japeth Aguilar decides to play for RP-Smart Gilas in next week’s charity game at the Araneta Coliseum for the benefit of typhoon Ondoy victims. Both Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Sonny Barrios and chairman Lito Alvarez reiterated that it’s Aguilar’s choice on whether to suit up for the PBA-backed Nationals of coach Yeng Guiao or see action for the team of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman. In all, SBP executive director Noli Eala hopes to raise a total of P1.6 million in donation. “Of course, that excludes the gate receipts to be generated for the game," he said. The winning team will receive P100,000 while the runner up gets P50,000. The first part of the doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. pitting the PBL-Liga Pilipinas selection, coached by Cebu Niños’ Yayoy Alcoseba, against a UAAP-NCAA All-Star team, whose coach remains unnamed. Also in attendance during the press presentation were PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios, league chairman Lito Alvarez, PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad, Romero, Eala, NCAA chairman Fr. Matheo De Jesus, Gregorio, Mark Molina, representing UAAP president Anton Montinola, Butch Antonio, representing Tac Padilla of Liga Pilipinas and Sienna Olaso, Araneta Coliseum’s director of entertainment. – GMANews.TV
