Far Eastern University stamped its class in the UAAP Season 72 table tennis championships, ruling both the womenâs and menâs competitions recently at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City. Spearheaded by former national team mainstay and eventual MVP Beverly Villar, the Lady Tamaraws nosed out fiercest rivals University of Sto. Tomas in the finals, 3-2, to make it three-in-row in the womenâs division.
Overall, the lady paddlers from Morayta won their 10th womenâs division tiara since 1983. The Tigresses settled for runner-up honors for the second straight year and got some sort of consolation when Henesey Aragon was adjudged Rookie of the Year. Making it a double celebration for FEU was the menâs crew of MVP Monarch Brogueza and top rookie Roy Remy Ducut. The Tamaraws exacted revenge on last yearâs finals tormentor UST, 3-1, to bump the top seeded Tigers off the throne and collar their first menâs crown since 2006. It was FEU's third men's division diadem overall.
UST thrice a bridesmaid Like their menâs and womenâs counterparts, the UST juniorsâ squad also fell short of the title on its end. The University of the East Junior Warriors frustrated the España-based contingent for a third time in Season 72 with a 3-2 win in their finals matchup. The junior paddlers from Recto topped the high school play for the first time since their four-peat in 2005, snapping the Tiger Cubsâ stranglehold that ran three straight years. Daryll Fradejas won the MVP plum for UE, last yearâs runner-up, while Jovian Bonzon went home with Rookie of the Year honor for dethroned champion UST.
