Ateneo, UP bag UAAP judo crowns


Ateneo de Manila University completed its title defense bid in the men’s division while its junior squad joined the State U women’s team in wrapping up their respective fourth straight crowns in Sunday’s UAAP judo tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan. Ateneo tallied 35 points behind two gold, one silver and five bronze medals while its high school squad had a 5-1-2 medal haul to keep the trophies at the Loyola Heights campus.

Jhonel Faelnar (under-60kg) and Salvador Reyes (over-100kg) were the two gold medalists for the Blue Eagles when they defeated Victor Pedro of Adamson and UST’s Jan Herrera. The lone silver came from Paulo Luz in the under-66kg division after losing to La Salle’s Gerard Teruel in the finals. Gian Dee (under-60kg), Joriel Abaca (under-73kg), Joseph Wong and Joshua Miciano (under-90kg) and Alejandro Umali (under-100kg) are the bronze medalists. Nikko Narva and Joseph Medina figured in an all-Ateneo junior’s finals in the under-73kg class with Narva beating his teammate. Matthew Jao was the runaway winner in junior’s over-100kg. Kevin Rebolledo (under-81kg) and Angelo Gabriel Gumila (under-100kg) won against UST’s Lester Carlota and Rex Ian Causapin to claim the gold in each division while Michael Gacusan defeated UE’s Kevin Louric Ng to win the juniors under-66kg title. Danilo de Leon (under-66kg) and Mark Austria (under-60kg) were the bronze medal winners for the Eaglets. UST placed second in the men’s and juniors divisions while State U and UE ended up third, respectively.
In the women’s class, Catherine Lariosa (under-52kg) and Ada Estanislao (under-57kg) provided the Diliman-based squad’s two gold medals after beating Ateneo’s Patricia Mendoza and UST’s Annie Ramirez, respectively. UP took home two gold, four silver and a bronze in the women’s division besting Santo Tomas’ 2-2-2 tally. De La Salle was third in women’s judo. Silver medalists for the Diliman-based squad are Frances Guevarra (under-48kg), Mylene Gonzales (under-63kg), Leslyn Gonzales (under-70kg) and Adrienne Bernardez (under-78kg). Daphne Lontajo won for UP the bronze in the under-52kg category. Other gold medal winners are in men’s: Nash Gale Tagle, UST (under-73), Gabriel Pangalangan, UP (under-81kg), Alexander Albor, UST (under-90kg), Gerardo Payno, UP (under-100kg); juniors: Lerie Padua, UE (under-60kg); women’s: Jewel de Castro, UST (under-63kg), Isabelle Reloj, UE (under-70kg), Florence Parayno, DLSU (under-78), Dian So, DLSU (over-78kg). – GMANews.TV
