Tigers on the prowl for 12th straight UAAP general title


"Tiger power" is once again on display in the UAAP Season 72 competitions as perennial overall champ University of Santo Tomas leads the race for the general championship at the end of the first half of action. Hunting for their 12th straight general championship and 37th overall, the Tigers took the halfway lead with 153 points in the official tally, highlighting their campaign with conquests in men’s taekwondo, men’s badminton and men’s beach volleyball.

In addition to the three titles, the España-based bets placed second in men’s and women’s table tennis, men’s and women’s judo and women’s taekwondo, and ranked third in men’s swimming. Tournament rules give a participating school 15 points for winning a championship, 12 points for second place and 10 points for third spot. Eight, six, four, two and one point are given to the next placers. Trailing the Tigers were De La Salle U with 136, Ateneo de Manila with 118, and host Far Eastern U and University of the Philippines, with 111 points apiece. The Green Archers benefited from their crowns in men’s swimming and women’s badminton; runner-up finishes in men’s badminton and men’s taekwondo; and No. 3 placing in women’s basketball, women’s swimming, women’s table tennis and women’s judo. The Blue Eagles banked on their men’s basketball and men’s judo titles while the Tamaraws gained from three crowns, namely men’s table tennis, women’s table tennis and women’s taekwondo. The Fighting Maroons profited from their victories in women’s judo and women’s swimming.

At sixth place was University of the East with 78 points spiked by first runner-up finishes in men’s basketball and women’s badminton, followed by Adamson with 54 points behind triumphs in women’s basketball and women’s beach volleyball. National University brought up the rear with 21 points.
