Paraguay striker Cabanas may never recall his shooting

MEXICO CITY — Paraguay football star Salvador Cabanas may never recall being shot in the head in a Mexico City bar, one of the city's top medical officials said on Tuesday. Cabanas, who was moved a few days ago to a rehabilitation clinic in Buenos Aires, miraculously recovered after the Jan. 25 shooting which left a bullet fragment lodged in his skull. Armando Ahued, Mexico City's health secretary, said Cabanas would be of no use to officials investigating the case. His alleged assailant, identified as Jose Jorge Balderas, was still at large. Cabanas was to have been a star for Paraguay at the World Cup. He appeared this month in a Mexico television interview. He was seated, was able to speak and said he would be back playing soon. Doctors treating him have not said if — or when — he might play again. The report also showed footage of him playing table tennis. "When will he recover?" Ahued said rhetorically in a radio interview. "We don't know. Recovery time is different. Perhaps never. The damage inflicted by the bullet could have a lasting effect. It could be that Mr. Cabanas will never remember what happened." – AP
