Eugenio stuns Magaway to reach Juntaphil Cup quarterfinals


Nicole Eugenio pulled off the biggest upset in the Junior Tennis Association of the Philippines (Juntaphil) Cup after stunning No.3 seed Lis Magaway to secure a quarterfinals berth in the girls' Under-18 division at the Manila Polo Club. Eugenio bounced back strong after a first-set loss then controlled the next two to complete a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 win. She will next face Treena Gutierrez, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Gladys Dimaculangan in the Group 3 event. No.1 seed Tamitha Nguyen, daughter of former tennis star Edna Olivarez, made her presence felt after blanking Ana Olivas, 6-0, 6-0. The win enabled the highly-touted tennis sensation in a Final 8 match with Anne Castillo. Castillo survived Macrine Mijares, who eked out a similar come-from-behind 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory. Second seed Jasmine Tan Ho also made short work of her opponent - Bea Ebriega – whom she nearly swept, 6-0, 6-1. Tan Ho will meet Jamielyn Tafalla, who scored a dominating 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Priscilla Flores. Others who advanced into the quarterfinals are No.4 seed Maika Tampoco and Aziel Manantan. Tampoco ripped Monica Banez, 6-1, 6-0, while Manantan outlasted Isabela Mendoza, 6-4, 6-4. In the boys division, second seed Ellison Bingcang survived John Rey Rudas, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6, to advance in the week-long tournament. Other winners were Joshua Miranda, Edison Portacio, Neil Paez, Marmichael Teng, Kim Senga, Romeo Dimakiling, Kevin Loke, Joachim Samson, Thomas Nguyen, Mark Verdarero, Vernon Huibonhua, Jasper Tan and Juan Carlo Cano while top seed Alberto Villamor drew a bye. Early winners in the Unisex-10 division were Lance Jumawan, Stephan Lhuillier, Gabriel Tiamson, Rafa Villanueva, Manuel Balce III, Cindy Nuguit, Jacob Martin, Chloemae Saraza, Monica Cruz, Michael Eala, Kyrene Espedido, Nio Tria, Angelo Saraza, Michael Beltran and top seed Marraphael Teng. - JVP/RCJ, GMANews.TV
