UAAP hopes to rekindle Pinoy heroism through sports
To rekindle the Filipinos' heroism is the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines' (UAAP) theme when the league opens its 73rd season on July 10 at the Araneta Coliseum. De La Salle University (DLSU) athletic director Bro. Bernard Oca, FSC, said during Tuesday's media briefing held at the school's Manila Campus, the current political situation â where Sen. Noynoy Aquino is headed for an imminent victory â helped them in coming up with this year's theme. With the theme: "Heroes," Oca said they are hoping that through sports, Filipinos would rediscover their heroism. "We are all coming from a successful national elections. Everyone is feeling hopeful and enjoying a renewed sense of optimism," said Oca. "The new leadership is going to take place and I believe no one can do all the work to make this country better." "And the role of the UAAP is to help those who participated and discover heroism within themselves in whatever arena they are in not just the athletes." Oca said the heroes theme of UAAP Season 73 is timely since the sacrifices made by athletes during training could result to their teams' success. "The success of "Team Pilipinas" lies not only on the leaders but on each and every citizen in their capacity to become everyday heroes," said Oca. "Let Filipinos discover the heroism in each one of us. Filipinos, especially the youth, help our leaders build the country." La Salle, which asked National University to take over as season 73 host, is using the UAAP as part of its preparation for the schoolâs centennial celebration on June 16, 2011. The rehearsals for the elaborate opening ceremonies next month are underway with La Salle alumni Mark Reyes directing the show. Other renowned La Salle graduates who will be performing are Gary Valenciano, Ogie Alcasid and Enchong Dee. The Green Archers will test the mettle of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the 2 p.m. opening game while the second game, Oca said, is still under negotiations. The highly-anticipated match between rivals Ateneo and La Salle is tentatively set on July 24 or 25. â RCJ/Jon Perez, GMANews.TV
