The Philippine powerlifting team, led by veteran Lily Pecante's record-breaking performance in the Womenâs Masters division, collected a total of 52 medals in the recently concluded 2010 Asian Bench Press Championship at Robinsons Otis in Manila.

The RP powerlifters collared 26 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals with the women's squad regaining the Open team crown they last held in 2006. It was actually a personal best for Pecante as she bettered her old mark of 286 pounds â she posted during the 2010 World Masters Bench Press Championships in Orlando, Florida last April â after lifting a total of 287 lbs for a new Asian Masters record. Pecante was the lone RP bet that broke an Asian record in the competition. Other Masters champions were Yolly Mendigoria, Dina Diaz, Tony Taguibao, Rosanna Garcia, Nina Oca, Aida Concepcion and Helen Mayo. World Bench Press title holders Merly Medina and Rose Vasquez had identical lifts of 198 lbs to clinch the gold in the 56kg and 60kg Open divisions Also contributing medals are former Asian Open Bench Press champions Jinky Guion, Michelle Cruz and Adeline Dumapong; and Asian Bench Press rookies Raya Maala and Anita Koykka. Inang Calma added a bronze in the Womenâs Open. Agustin Kitan was the lone gold medalist in the men's class after a 347-lb lift in the 56kg class while Ning Lazo, with a 485lb lift, and Vic Valdez bagged the silver and bronze in the 82.5kg and 60kg divisions.

Marc Conrad Reyes, Raphael Alfonso Hidalgo, Jed Marc Millora, Pong Meimban, Betina Bordeos and Pia Taguibao won the gold medals in the Juniors side while Regie Ramirez, Raymond Debuque and Leah Llena topped their respective divisions in the Sub-Junior class. Other age-group medalists are Johnell Man-On, Ralph Aguinaldo, Homer Valmonte, Charmagne Castro, Julie Ann Ramirez, Isaac Cortez, Jayvee Sarabia, Roselle Santiago, Luis Amparo, Nestor Sevilla, Lucas Lorenzo, Nick Yap, Ryann Lim, Clark Cruz, Edwin Sonido, Lile Gayanes, Allan Paje, Bill Blankenship, Alvin Yap, Roland Maye, Ruby Gan, Cesar Fernandez, De Manalang, and Mon Debuque. The event is organized by the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines (PAP) headed by president Eddie Torres. PAP chairman emeritus and former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos was the guest speaker during the opening ceremony. A total of 290 athletes from Japan, Kazakhstan, Philippines, India, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong and Menâs Open Team champion Iran joined the tournament.
