Chessers, beach spikers to represent RP in Universiade


The Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) presented the two chessers and the two lady beach volleyball players who will be compete in the 26th Universiade in Shenzhen, China from Aug. 12 to 13 next year. FESSAP president David Ong and Universiade Chef de Mission of the Philippine delegation Alvin Tai Lian presented Philippine Inter Schools, Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (PISCUAA) chess champions Jan Roldan Oriendo and Angelica Dilim of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Jennifer Manzano and Satchel Senupe, two members from the qualifying champions of the Petron Beach Volleyball event. The four athletes will be among the Philippine representatives at the Universiade meet, an event sanctioned and organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). FESSAP is officially recognized by the FISU and has been designated to represent the Philippines in the Universiade. Other members of the FESSAP executive committee who attended the ceremony were Prof. Robert Milton Calo, also the president of PISCUAA, Teresita Abundo, Jedel Agron, Jeane Monteverde, Christian Tan and Atty. Romeo Rizal Vicente. Other officials present were Engineer Ted Cada of Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) and chess coach Ricardo Alvarado of PUP. Tai Lian and Calo will attend the Universiade Organizing Committee meeting in Beijing next month. The Philippines will compete in chess, archery, badminton, basketball, table tennis and beach volleyball. Other sports disciplines in the Universiade are handball, karate-do, football, futsal, shooting, volleyball, tennis, taekwondo, baseball, weightlifting and athletics. - RCJ/KY, GMANews.TV
