Alcano loses to Japanese foe in World 9-Ball finals
Ronnie Alcano failed in his attempt of earning a second world 9-ball crown as he dropped a 13-11 decision against Japan's Yukio Akagariyama in the 2011 World 9-Ball Championship finals at the Al Saab Sports Club in Doha, Qatar. Akagariyama won the last two racks to capture the $36,000 top prize while Alcano settled for the $18,000 runner-up prize. According to the World Pool Association website, Alcano failed to sink the two-ball at the side pocket which the Japanese took advantage. Luck sided with Akagariyama in the alternate break format and he cleaned the 24th rack to take the win. Alcano only led, 3-2, but it was a close match until the end. Akagariyama, however, didn't blinked and was leading in the entire match. Alcano defeated compatriot Dennis Orcullo, 11-9, to earn a spot in the finals in front of a packed crowd. Akagariyama, on the other hand, squeezed out a hard-earned 11-10 win against England's Mark Gray. Alcano, who is now being managed by Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, reached the hill at 10-6 but Orcullo won three straight racks to tie the match before the 2006 World 9-Ball champion secured the victory in the 20th. - Reuben Terrado/JVP, GMA News
