Lanete's fiery form earns him NCAA weekly award

Garvo Lanete sustained his fiery form to power defending champion San Beda to back-to-back wins that pushed the Red Lions' on top at the end of the elimination round of the 87th NCAA men's basketball tournament. Lanete, repaying coach Frankie Lim's trust, proved brilliant with the game on the line against erstwhile leader San Sebastian in the battle for the top seeding last Friday. Lanete nailed back-to-back treys in the last 75 seconds to lead the Lions past the Stags, 88-85. The Zamboanga-born guard finished with a game-high 27 points, including 11 in the final period as the Lions secured the top spot at the end of the elimination round for the sixth straight season. Lim was quick to pay tribute to his starting guard's contributions. "It was a tough game for us, but we had another big night from Garvo again," Lim said of Lanete, who has been chosen the Accel/316 NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week. Lanete also stood out last Wednesday when he fired a team-high 17 points in a 91-70 drubbing of the Stags that forced the playoff for the top spot. It marked the second straight week that Lanete was chosen as the NCAA's top player, after his heroics in the convincing win over Letran last October 7. Lanete bested the likes of teammates Rome Dela Rosa and the resurgent Anthony Semerad for the weekly award. — JVP, GMA News
