UE bags 5th straight women's fencing crown

University of the East snatched its fifth straight women's crown while University of Santo Tomas (UST) regained the men’s title in the 74th UAAP fencing tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. "The key to this championship is dedication and passion,” said long-time UE coach Rolando Canlas whose Lady Warriors collected their sixth championship in the league. Patricia Marie Melendres capped her final season with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award to lead UE's successful campaign. Former Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist Cristine Almas also played her final year with UE, but Canlas is not worried. "We have a good program. Mayroong mawawala pero mayroon kaming mga high school standouts na papasok para mapalakas ang team next year," said Canlas.

The Lady Warriors also clinched two silver and two bronze medals to compliment Melendres and Almas' victories. La Salle finished second with a 1-2-3 gold-silver-bronze medal haul fashioned around Season 74 top rookie Nadine Licono. Far Eastern U finished third with two silver and one bronze medals. Tiger power The Growling Tigers clinched three gold and one bronze to bag their third men’s title, UST's first since the 2008-09 season. UST's Donnie Navarro was named the tournament MVP while UE's Bruce Kevin Ng bagged the Rookie of the Year honors. “Lakas ng loob ang ginawa namin this season. Lahat ng teams pantay-pantay kaya kailangan ng mga bata na mag-step up,” said UST coach Emerson Segui. FEU placed second with a 2-1-4 tally, while last season's title holder, University of the Philippines, wound up third (1-1-3).
