La Salle, in its last two remaining games, only needed just one win to cement its hold of the top seeding in the semifinal round of the 74th UAAP women's volleyball tournament. Abigail Maraño scored 15 points on 11 attacks in leading the Lady Archers (13-0) to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-18 triumph over the National University Bulldogs as the defending champions moved closer to an elimination round sweep. The Lady Spikers, even if they dropped their last game against the number two-ranked Ateneo Lady Eagles (11-2)—a 25-8, 25-23, 25-18 winner over the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in the other women's match—on Sunday, will still end up on top. "We'll try our best to stop La Salle's bid to sweep the elimination round. It will be hard to beat a team that enjoys a thrice-to-beat advantage in the finals. Hopefully all of my players step up on Sunday," said Ateneo coach Roger Gorayeb. La Salle will clinch a thrice-to-beat advantage in the finals if it completes an elimination-round sweep. NU (1-12) started out strong in the first set as it enjoyed a 7-1 and 8-3 leads over the obviously stunned La Salle side. But that turned out to be short lived as Ara Galang and Maraño sparked an 8-3 scoring spurt to tie the count at 11-11. La Salle led the rest of the way with NU threatened within two points, 16-14. Michelle Gumabao, Galang and Maraño, however, kept the Lady Archers out of harms way as the Taft-based crew closed the set at 25-16. It was an all-La Salle show from then on as the Lady Bulldogs failed to keep up with their opponents' relentless attacks. Galang, Gumabao, Maraño and rookie Mika Reyes kept NU at bay in the second set. La Salle, capitalizing on NU's errors, even enjoyed a 10-point spread (24-10) with Reyes pushing La Salle to a two-set edge with a well-placed kill. The Lady Bulldogs, staring at a 2-0 deficit, tried to strike back and even led in the third on short scoring spurts. NU, however, faded down the stretch as top guns Kai Nepomuceno and Lucelle Bayron failed to pierce the wall-like net defense of La Salle's Gumabao and Maraño. — JVP, GMA News
