UM-Tagum rules Nestea beach volleyball’s opening leg
University of Mindanao-Tagum ruled both the men's and women's divisions in the Mindanao leg of the 15th Nestea Beach Volleyball Collegiate Championship over the weekend held at the Paradise Park Resort in Samal, Davao del Norte. Jefty Mora and Kim Lapiz downed rival and 2007 champion Mindanao State University-Tawi-Tawi's Imbran Idris and Roldan Medino, 21-14, 21-19, while their female counterparts—Mylene Que and Liezl Manatad—scored a 21-18, 21-19 win over University of Mindanao-Davao's May Shiel Agton and Reynilen Raterta. UM-Tagum leads four other collegiate teams from Mindanao that earned berths to the Boracay finals from April 19 to 21. Only the top three teams from each division will advance into the national championship. Holy Cross of Davao College defeated Davao Merchant Marine Academy-College of Southern Philippines (men's division), 21-14, 21-14, while Jose Maria College of Davao City tripped Cor Jesu College of Digos City, 21-11, 21-15, to clinch third place, respectively and the last finals berths. The Visayas leg will be held in Moalboal, Cebu from March 9 to 11 while the Luzon (March 21 to 23) and Metro Manila (March 25 to 27) eliminations will be staged at the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) Campus in Tanauan, Batangas. — JVP, GMA News
