FilOil: Bulldogs flash depth, obliterate Generals
The National University Bulldogs were unstoppable against the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, lording over them en route to a 93-52 victory on Wednesday in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Tournament, held at the San Juan Arena. Right from the start, the Generals had difficulty penetrating National University's defense and were forced into long shots. A long ball by EAC guard John Monteclaro kept them alive as they trailed the Bulldogs, 9-7, but that was the closest EAC got. EAC was held without a field goal in the last 4:30 of the first quarter, while the Bulldogs went on a 16-2 run, with the last bucket coming off an alley-oop to Emmanuel Mbe from Mark De Guzman, tagging the score at 29-11. The Bulldogs continued to romp in the second period, putting up eight uncontested points, before EAC wingman Jan Acebron notched his team's first points in the period with a thirteen-foot jumper in the lane. It was not enough though, as a National University line-up that consisted mostly of reserves continued to run the Generals off the court, increasing their lead to 40-15 at the 6:13 mark. Momentarily the Generals' offense came to life as Igee King scored on a breakaway layup and John Tayongtong converted a backdoor lob play to lift EAC to 23 scored points. NU responded by closing the quarter with a 7-2 run to pull away, 53-25 at the half. Parks, saddled on the bench with foul trouble for most of the first half, took the reins for his team in the third quarter tallying seven of his nine points, his first two coming on a sidestepping drive in the lane over EAC center Noubi Happi. With 30 minutes gone, NU was up 75-35, allowing Parks, the reigning UAAP MVP, to sit out the final period. Forward Denice Villamor led four NU scorers in double digits with 16 points. Center Emmanuel Mbe and guard Cedric Labing-isa had 12 apiece, with Mbe adding 14 boards. College of Saint Benilde transferee Mark De Guzman stuffed the stat sheet with 11 markers, eight rebounds, four dimes and two steals versus just a single turnover. National University scored at will against the Generals, shooting 53 percent from the field, including a blistering 59 percent inside the arc as EAC was helpless in the paint. Noube Happi and Igee King each had 12 for the Emilio Aguinaldo, but they were a combined 10-of-30 from the field, a clip that was symptomatic of the entire team, which converted only 20-of-73. The victory allowed this season’s UAAP hosts to keep their record flawless as they improved to four wins against no losses in Group B. EAC on the other hand, suffered their second defeat, bringing them down to 1-2 in the standings. - AMD, GMA News The scores: NU 93: Villamor 16, Mbe 12, Labing-isa 12, De Guzman 11, Parks 9, Alolino 6, Celda 5, Javillonar 4, Neypes 4, Singh 4, Ignacio 4, Rono 4, Betaneye 2 EAC 52: Happi 12, King 12, Pillas 8, Tayontong 8, Monteclaro 6, Jamon 2, Acebron 2, Sanchez 1, Morada 1, Munsayac 0, Mallari 0, Duran 0, Yaya 0 Quarter scores: 29-11, 53-25, 75-33, 93-52 FilOil 050212 NU vs EAC
