Palarong Pambansa: Julian Fuentes breaks long jump record

It's the first day of competitions in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa, but already a record has fallen.

Julian Fuentes from the Cagayan Valley region broke a 10-year-old record in the long jump event of the Secondary Boys division, Sunday in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Fuentes soared through the air and landed 7.26 meters from jump off point, far ahead of the 6.45 meters made by event's second placer, Jhun Nagtibay of the Southern Tagalog or Calabarzon region.

The record was held by Paulo Martinez of Calabarzon, who set it at 7.15 meters back in 2002. Fuentes' feat broke that by 0.11 meters. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Toni Umali, who is in charge of school sports at the DepEd, said about 6,500 young athletes are competing in the ongoing Palarong Pambansa. — Adrian Dy/ELR, GMA News
