The Far Eastern University Tamaraws shook off a turnover-filled start to win big against the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 69-52, Friday in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Tournament at the Arena in San Juan. Five early FEU turnovers allowed JRU to build a 10-4 advantage, but FEU was able to come right back, getting to within a point on an Arvie Bringas lay-up at the end of the first ten minutes, 16-15. A 6-0 blast by former Technological Institute of the Philippines Engineer Anthony Hargrove and Terrence Romeo gave the UAAP runners-up the lead for good in the second quarter though, after they broke through a 24-24 tie. Lay-ups by John Lopez and Romnick Mendoza kept JRU close, but FEU saved their best for the end of the second quarter, exploding for nine unanswered to enter the break, up 41-28. In the third quarter, JRU managed just seven measly points as the Tams' defense proved formidable. In the latter part of the period, FEU allowed just two free throws, while RR Garcia's fingerprints were all over his side's 13 points in that same span, making it 58-35 with ten minutes left to play. There wasn't much the Heavy Bombers could do from that point on, though they did eat into the deficit late, closing out the game with a 5-0 blast against the third-stringers of FEU.
Taking stock After the game, FEU head coach Bert Flores commended his team for a good job on the boards, as they out-hustled their opponents 55-27 on the glass. Rebounds, he said, were a point of emphasis, after defeats to Ateneo in the UAAP Finals and to NU in the first game of their FilOil campaign. Terrence Romeo torched JRU for 17 points, and he also chipped in five rebounds and three assists. RR Garcia had an off-night from the field, making just 1-of-8 tries from downtown, but he tallied a team-best seven dimes to go with his nine markers. Big men Mark Bringas and Carl Bryan Cruz added eight each. JRU drew 12 points and eight rebounds from power forward John Lopez, and 11 scores from point guard Alex Almario, but no other Heavy Bomber scored more than six, including Fil-Am sharpshooter Nate Matute, who missed all five of his triple tries. The win improved FEU's mark to 4-1, behind the Group B-leading National University Bulldogs who are currently loss-less, versus seven wins. JRU on the other hand, dropped to the .500 mark with a 3-3 slate.
