Two siblings will lead their respective Finals-hopeful teams, when Jeric Teng and the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers go head-to-head against Jeron Teng and the De La Salle University Green Archers, in the second opening day game of UAAP Season 76, Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Older brother Jeric's squad went all the way to the Finals last season, but failed to break through against the ADMU Blue Eagles. However, they did earn a measure of revenge during the PCCL tournament, besting their rivals in a three-game series.
While most of their key pieces have returned, they'll have to compensate for the graduation of veteran point guard Jeric Fortuna, who quarterbacked this team with so much poise and confidence. A combination of Ed Daquiaog, Robin Tan, and Jon Sheriff will have to pick up the slack for him, and get the ball to the likes of Teng, Aljon Mariano, and Karim Abdul.
On the flip side, Jeron and the rest of the Archers will be put to the test for the first time under new head coach Juno Sauler, who was given the position just weeks before the start of the tourney.
Armed with a roster of just 13 players (three less than the league maximum of 16), the hope is that new additions like Jason Perkins and Rob Bolick, will be able to play fluidly alongside Teng, Almond Vostoros and Norbert Torres. That wasn't the case when they were still under head coach Gee Abanilla, ending their FilOil run with three straight losses.
Game starts at 4pm.
