The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers will try to buck the odds and land the first loss on the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, when these two sides meet on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
UST (3-1) struggled early against a Charles Mammie-less UE Red Warriors team, but they found their range late, breaking a 74-all deadlock with a scorching performance from the field, a 14-3 explosion to seal the win.
Perhaps more importantly, they got big offensive outings from Karim Abdul (25 points, 13 rebounds) and Aljon Mariano (24 points, 11 rebounds), after the duo put up sub-par efforts in their previous three outings. With Jeric Teng ruled out, likely until the second round, those two, plus Kevin Ferrer, will be expected to shoulder the Tiger's offense, and as such, if they can draw similar efforts, they should be alright while their captain recuperates.
FEU (5-0) meanwhile put on an ace display of shooting, but struggled to close out the NU Bulldogs when those two teams played Wednesday. The Tams posted multiple 20-point leads, but allowed NU to get within six late, with just under half a minute to play. Luckily for them, Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia came up clutch to put away their foes, via a combined 3-of-4 stint at the foul line.
The Tams' offense churned out a 15-of-29 three-point mark, one shy of the modern UAAP record. Perhaps more importantly, 19 of their 30 field goal makes were assisted, a huge change from the isolation-heavy style of play they were labeled as running in the past. Right now, they lead the league with 16.6 extra passes per outing, helping them to a 32.1 percent clip from long-range, also tops in the UAAP.
Game starts at 4pm.
