Boom Boom Bautista remains undefeated

Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista of Bohol extended his winning streak with a third round stoppage of Mexican Marino Montiel Gonzalez in their scheduled 12-round bout of the Battle of Cebu - Moment of Truth in Cebu City late Saturday evening. Bautista's booming left to Gonzalez's midsection sent the latter to the canvass and was not able to stand as referee Bruce McTavish counted and waived the fight off. It was the second time Gonzalez kissed the canvas as he likewise went down in the first round after absorbing a strong right from Bautista. The victory kept Bautista's record to an unblemished 22 wins with 17 knockdowns. Bautista will next fight Sergio Mediana of Argentina in the 12-round WBO superbantam title eliminator on May 5 as an undercard in the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Oscar de la Hoya fight. Bautista's victory, however, failed to fully compensate for the defeat of Filipino Z "The Dream" Gorres, who experienced a nightmarish defeat against Fernando Montiel of Mexico in their WBO superflyweight title bout. Montiel retained his WBO superflyweight title in what is considered as a controversial split decision against the Filipino. Judge Raul Caiz saw the bout 115-111 for Montiel, official Denny Nelson gave it 115-111 for Gorres, while another judge, Chuck Giampa, gave it 114-112 for Montiel. The defeat maybe due to two deductions in points given by referee Sammy Viruet on Gorres. Meanwhile, Jimrex 'The Executioner' Jaca pocketed the WBO Asia-Pacific superfeatherweight title with a seven-round knockout of Indonesian Simson Butar-Butar. Butar-Butar absorbed such a beating from Jaca that he merely refused to stand up with 1:02 in the round. In the other bouts, Weng Haya gained a unanimous decision over Romnick Rapista, 39-37; Bai Elorde scored a four-round unanimous decision victory over Joseph Mateo; and ALA Boy Joseph Omanz likewise won through a unanimous decision over Markyll Taroja; Bert Batawang knocked down Indonesian Sofyan Efendi twice in the fourth round to win by TKO. - GMANews.TV
