V-League: PLDT disconnects UP Lady Maroons

PLDT got their campaign off to a stirring start behind the one-two punch of Gretchel Soltones and Suzanne Roces, as the duo powered them to a 25-15 25-21 25-21 win over UAAP side University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

It was the third loss in as many outings for UP, while PLDT opened their account with a win in the 2014 V-League Open Conference.

Soltones and Roces combined for 30 spikes, with the former adding a service ace as well, to lead the way for PLDT. Ma. Rosario Soriano added 10, including a whopping six service aces.

UP leaned on their own dynamic duo, as Kath Bersola and Angeli Araneta took up the cudgels for the team, notching 25 of their side’s 57 markers. Team captain Nicole Tiamzon was their next top scorer with five.

PLDT had a huge 41-28 advantage in spikes, as UP’s defense couldn’t come up with stops. The Lady Maroons also conceded a 27-12 disadvantage in excellent digs, and a 17-10 mark in excellent receptions to their foes. - AMD, GMA News
