Mac Belo scored 21 points to lead the Far Eastern University Tamaraws past the University of the East Red Warriors, 73-63, on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Anthony Hargrove added 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Mike Tolomia tallied 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Warriors leaned on their full court press in the first quarter, erasing an 8-2 FEU lead with a 20-4 run. UE managed to finish the first 10 minutes with a 22-12 lead after a buzzer-beater from Mike Tolomia.
The Tams revived their assault in the second quarter, milking the shaded lane for points. Mac Belo strung eight points, while Anthony Hargrove, Achie Inigo and Mike Tolomia chipped in from all around. FEU cut the lead to one at the half, 32-31.
Neither team let up in the third, as Charles Mammie tried to keep the Warriors ahead. Belo had a lot more help at the other end, though, as a five-point swing from Carl Cruz and Mike Tolomia established a 52-49 lead for the Tams heading into the fourth.
Back to back hits from Roger Pogoy stretched the lead to seven, 60-53, before Roi Sumang tried to trim the defivcit through trips to the line. A 6-2 run, capped by conversions from Anthony Hargrove and Cruz gave FEU a 10-point lead in the last three minutes of the game.
A Sumang and one at the 2:55 mark was the last basket for UE, as Inigo and Belo settled the final score in the final minute.
The Warriors forced FEU to 31 turnovers while committing only 20. The Tams shot a better 48 percent, though, to eclipse UE's 36 percent. FEU also led in rebounds (49-33) and in bench points (27-17).
Paul Varilla led UE with 12 points and five boards while Bong Galanza had 11. Chris Javier and Moustapha Arafat had eight each, while Roi Sumang struggled with seven points on a 1 of 13 shooting clip. — JST, GMA News
