The National University stunned De La Salle University, 25-20, 25-20, 25-19, to force a do-or-die match in the step-ladder semifinals of the UAAP women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Spikers started out flat and never recovered from a slow start, while the Lady Bulldogs played smart with off the blocks and a huge lift from the middle courtesy of star spiker Jaja Santiago.

Jaja Santiago and Myla Pablo topscored with 13 points apiece for NU, while Jorelle Singh finished with 11 points. Rizza Mandapat added 10 points, skipper Desiree Dadang contributed silently with eight points, five off blocks.

La Salle once again leaned heavily on team captain Ara Galang with 14 points, while Cyd Demecillo wound up with 10. Mika Reyes had eight.

The Lady Bulldogs, who have never defeated the Lady Spikers since 2008, overwhelmed the eight-time champions with 40 attack points compared to La Salle's 32. They also committed less errors with 14, while the Taft-based squad had 19.

NU controlled the entire game and never let the momentum escape from their grip, immediately answering back whenever DLSU erupted into a rally. La Salle took the lead momentarily in the third set, 16-15, but the Sampaloc crew calmly responded with their own plays to score four unanswered points down the stretch to seal the game.
The two teams will face each other in the sudden death game on Saturday at Mall of Asia Area to earn the right to face defending champions Ateneo de Manila University in the finals. —JST, GMA News
