Gonzalez wants rematch with Peñalosa

Erstwhile World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champ Jhonny Gonzalez (34-6, 29 KOs), of Mexico City wants a rematch with Filipino pug Gerry Peñalosa (52-6-2, 35 KOs). Gonzalez lost his title against Peñalosa last Saturday through a knockout in one of the seven matches at the 2007 World Cup of Boxing at the Arco Arena in California last Saturday (Sunday in the Philippines). In a report posted on the Fightnews.com website, Gonzalez' manager Oswaldo Kuchle said he was negotiating the rematch with promoter Golden Boy Promotions. Gonzalez' camp wants the match to be held in October. "Jhonny doesn't have a scar on his face," Kuchle was quoted as saying. "He made a mistake in not protecting himself, enabling Peñalosa to land that 'one in a million shot.'" Gonzalez was leading the match until Peñalosa was able to shock his opponent with a direct hit to the liver. Kuchle added in the report that he is also negotiating with Televisa, one of Mexico's largest entertainment network, to televise the match which he hopes will be held in Mexico. When Peñalosa scored the knockout, he was lagging behind in the judges scorecards. Judge C.J. Ross gave Gonzalez a 59-55 lead and judge Steve Morrow penned it 58-56 for the Mexican while Ralph McKnight saw it at 57-57. - GMANews.TV
