TUP scores major win in 1st Universiade chess
The Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) scored a major victory Tuesday in chess, as it ruled the men's division and finished a strong second in the women's side of competitions in the 1st Philippine Universiade held at the Harrison Plaza Mall. The TUP men's chess team of Mark Anthony Estabaya, John Anthony Pedroso, and Mark Louie Balderas scored a total of 12 points to win the gold medal, followed by the Eulogio "Amang" Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST) with 11.5 points, and Trinity University with 10, according to a Universiade statement. In the women's side, the EARIST team â composed of Ma. Kristina Ormacido, Dovelyn Navarro, Nimfa Tayag, and Carren Biscocho â scored 13.5 points to bag the title, followed by TUP (Loida Sacueza, Jonalyn Go, Annie Rose Uy and Lorna Sacueza) with 12 points, and the Philippine School of Business Administration (PSBA) with 7.5 points. Over at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum pool, the De La Salle University-Dasmariñas tankers ruled both the men and women's side, with two of its top swimmers emerging with the most number of gold medals after two days of competition. At the close of the swimming competition, DLSU-D garnered a total of 642 points, 328 courtesy of its men's team and 314 collected by its women's squad. Trinity came in a far second with an aggregate 465 points (213-men, 252-women), while TUP was third with 278 (161-117). DLSU-D's Eman Balacuit emerged as the most bemedalled swimmer in the men's side with eight golds, while teammate Ando Munchiko added eight for the Cavite-based squad. Balacuit clinched the gold medals in the men's 200-meter butterfly, 200-m medley relay, 400-m freestyle relay, 100-m freestyle, 200-m freestyle relay, 400-m freestyle relay, 400-m medley relay, and the 800-m freestyle relay. Munchiko's gold harvest came in the 100-m breastroke, 400-m individual medley, 200-m medley relay, 400-m freestyle relay, 1,500-m freestyle, 200-m individual medley, 400-m medley relay, and the 800-m freestyle relay. In the women's side, DLSU-D's Sheila Magallanes won the most number of golds with ten, followed by Arlene Reyes with seven and Rischelyn Sena with six. In basketball hostilities at the San Andres Sports Complex, the University of Perpetual Help-Las Piñas, which topped Group B with a 3-0 card, leaned on the high-scoring Raffy Ynion, who tossed in 20 and Mike Kong, who had 19, to swamp Trinity University of Asia, 90-76, at the start of the crossover semifinals. PATTS College of Aeronautics turned back PSBA, 95-86, in the other semis game to arrange a title tiff with UPHR-LP on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the San Andres Sports Complex. Trinity and PSBA clash for third place at 2 p.m. In women's volleyball games held Monday, Emilio Aguinaldo College swept past St. Jude College, 25-17, 25-12, 25-20, to top Group B; while in Group A, City College of Manila downed San Carlos City College (Pangasinan), 25-5, 25-5, 25-0 for its first win in three games. In other Group B result, it was Lyceum over EARIST, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 22-15, and EAC over EARIST, 25-15, 17-25, 25-21 and 25-23. - GMANews.TV
