RP's Ferrera tops hammer throw, breaks own SEA Games record

Arniel Ferrera of the Philippines won a gold and broke his own hammer throw record at the SEA Games on Saturday, getting a distance of 60.98 meters over his 2005 record of 60.47 meters. Tantipong Phetchaiya of Thailand got the silver with his distance of 56.47 meters and compatriot Yongjaros Kanju got the bronze with his distance of 53.57 meters. Ferrera fouled on his first try but bagged the gold medal on his second trip to the throwing area where he heaved the ball to 59.76 meters. Not satisfied with his feat, he followed this up with a better 60.79-meter heave before fouling anew in his fourth. He opted to pass on his fifth try in a move to conserve his energy, then with victory already sealed, took his last try to further establish what officially became his new record. The athletics competition of the 24th SEA Games are being held at His Majesty's The King's 80th Anniversary Stadium in Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand. - GMANews.TV
