YEAR IN REVIEW

Victorious Filipino athletes in 2019

There is no doubt that 2019 was a stellar and fruitful year for Filipino athletes.

The Philippines won the overall plum in the 30th Southeast Asian Games last December after garnering a total of 387 medals behind a 149-117-121 gold-silver-bronze tally.

Filipino athletes here and there poured their hearts out to give pride and glory to the country.

Chino Trinidad's Wednesday report on State of the Nation with Jessica Soho looked back at all the triumphant moments of these athletes.

First on the list is SEA Games golden boy Carlos Yulo who owned 2019 after becoming the first Filipino to cop gold at the floor exercise category in the World Artistic Gymnastics competition at Stuttgart, Germany last October.

His win in the league gave him a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Aside from those feats, the 19-year-old also bagged seven medals in the SEA Games behind a 2-5-0 tally.

Meanwhile, Nesthy Petecio also made history last October after capturing gold in the 2019 AIBA Women's Boxing World Championship in Russia.

Aside from joining boxing legend and Senator Manny Pacquiao as torchbearers in the recently-concluded biennial meet, she also struck gold in the women's featherweight 57kg event.

Moreover, top Filipino Paul vaulter EJ Obiena will not miss this list after becoming the first Filipino to qualify for the Olympics.

He captured gold in the 30th Summer Universiade in Italy last September and also notched the top spot in the men's pole vault event of the SEA Games.

Olympian Hidilyn Diaz added a SEA Games gold medal to her collection after winning the women's 55kg weightlifting event.

Margielyn Didal also took home two gold medals for the country in the women's Game of S.K.A.T.E. and women's street categories of the multi-sporting event.

Boxer Jerwin Ancajas, on the other hand, retained his IBF super flyweight world title after defeating Miguel Gonzalez in the co-main event at Auditoria GNP Seguros in Mexico last December.  — Ma. Angelica Garcia/BAP, GMA News
